An AI Curriculum for Your Classroom

The Writing, Agency, and AI module helps students develop confidence, purpose, and critical awareness in their writing by learning to collaborate with artificial intelligence effectively. Designed for classroom integration, the module provides self-checks, reflection prompts, and practical strategies that prepare students to use AI responsibly across academic, professional, and personal contexts.

How Does This Module Benefit Students?

Students gain the ability to:

  • Recognize distinct roles for both humans and AI in the writing process.
  • Use prompting strategies and iteration to generate meaningful AI outputs.
  • Develop personal guidelines for AI use by weighing opportunities, risks, and limitations.
  • Strengthen their sense of agency and confidence as writers.

What Does It Teach?

The module includes three main sections:

  • Collaborating with AI – Exploring distinct ways AI can support writing while maintaining human oversight.
  • Communicating with AI – Learning to design effective prompts and use iteration intentionally.
  • Continuing with AI – Reflecting on values, risks, and guidelines for sustained and ethical AI use.

How Can Faculty Incorporate This Material?

You can bring this module into your teaching in flexible ways. You might assign the self-checks and reflections as ungraded activities to help students engage more deeply, or use the discussion prompts to spark critical conversations about AI’s role in writing. The content can also be adapted for workshops, writing assignments, or guided class discussions. If you teach writing-intensive courses or first-year seminars, you can embed the module directly to reinforce core learning outcomes and strengthen students’ confidence in working with AI.

Who Developed It?

University Writing Program faculty, Dr. Mickey Schafer and Dr. Emily Bald, developed this module in partnership with the AI² Center and Leslie Mojeiko at the UFIT Center for Instructional Technology and Training (CITT).
