Dr. Jennifer Wooten and Laura Jervis transformed Beginning Spanish I and II into UF's first asynchronous online language courses for residential students. Their design uses AI as an infrastructure for low-stakes practice by integrating conversational simulations, AI-assisted writing, and reflective self-assessment to strengthen linguistic and digital literacy. By decoupling grading from AI outputs and emphasizing process-based reflection, they promote ethical, self-directed learning. Dr. Wooten is the director of language instruction at the Department of Spanish and Portuguese Studies, and Jervis is an instructional designer at UF's Center for Instructional Technology and Training.
