Interim Director


Dr. Hans van Oostrom was named interim director of the AI2 Center in April 2025 and began his duties May 1.  Under his leadership, the center will continue to support and advance the UF AI Initiative of developing curricula, publishing research in AI education, assessing AI learning outcomes, and building new industry relationships.  The center will continue to offer professional development opportunities for K-12 educators and faculty at UF and beyond. The goal is to continue to integrate AI Across the Curriculum, ensuring that all UF students have access to AI education, regardless of their major or technical background.

Dr. van Oostrom was the founding chair of the Department of Engineering Education in the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering, which remains his academic home.  He oversees the university-wide Undergraduate Certificate in AI Fundamentals and Applications, available to any UF student interested in AI learning, regardless of major. He also serves as faculty chair of the University Curriculum Committee and academic assessment coordinator for the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.

Van Oostrom earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the Eindhoven University of Technology in the Netherlands. He joined UF in 1998 and is passionate about students and pedagogy. His research interests are artificial intelligence and precision learning.
